Topic 6 Foodborne Illnesses and Disease-Causing Agents
Recent statistics have shown that about 1 in every 6 Americans (or about 48 million Americans) will become sick with foodborne illness at any given moment.
Of those 48 million who do end up with foodborne illnesses, 128000 of them will end up in the hospital and 3000 of them will die.
Figure 6.2 shows the rate of reported foodborne illnesses outbreaks per one million individuals (and the total amount of outbreaks) by state and by suspected etiology.
