3.6.1 Barriers to the one health approach

The three main barriers are:

  1. Education

    Physicians, veterinarians, and environmental scientists traditionally have little to no knowledge of other disciplines.

  2. Funding

    This is often restricted to the domain rather than the interface.

  3. Limited communications

    There is not enough communication between and even within members of various disciplines.

3.6.2 Enablers of the one health approach

There are also three main enablers:

  1. The internet

    This enables the rapid sharing of information and data.

  2. Advances in technology

    This allows for robust molecular epidemiology to be carried out.

  3. Increase in computational power

    This allows large and complex datasets around the globe to be studied to identify problems.
