8.1 Detecting Outbreaks

There are several avenues through which outbreaks can be detected, including but not limited to:

1. Routine surveillance of data (either from hospitalized patients or the community).
2. Astute clinicians, infection control practitioners, and / or laboratory staff.
3. Members of the public (especially via social media).
