6.3 Ideal experiments: Possible “ideal” design

  • Randomized field experiment to max. internal/external validity
  • Draw large random sample from target population (e.g. persons living in Mannheim): Why?
  • Measure trust by accessing thoughts before and after treatment: Why?
  • Recruit homogeneous offenders: Why?
  • Randomly treat half the sample with exactly the same negative factual experience (treatment group). Leave other half in peace (control group): Why?
  • Strengths?
    • Random sample; Treatment = real-life experience; Control over timing of treatment/outcome measurement
  • Weakness?
    • External validity?
