Here is a useful list of terms introduced in lectuer 1 and terms we will use throughout the course.

• In all of these example, we wanted to describe the values on the y-axis in terms of the values on the x-axis.

• The variable on the y-axis plays the roll of the .

• The variables on the x-axis plays the roll of the \textbf{explanatory variable.

• The relationships we have talked about are not mathematical exact. It’s just what we observe.

• All we want to be able to do is use the explanatory variable to predict or explain the response variable.
