EXERCISE 7.1

Use the data in the file HP_LONDON_JAN19.xlsx for this exercise.
A research sub question: did the house prices in the City of Westminster District increase in January 2019 relative to the prices in 2018. In 2018 the average selling price was 1.10 mln GBP.
Perform a one sample t-test on the mean to answer the sub question.

EXERCISE 7.2

Use the data in the file HP_LONDON_JAN19.xlsx.
Use a chi-square-goodness-of-FIT-test to test if the distribution of prices of detached houses sold in January 2019 is: 30% less than or equal to 1.0 mln GPB, 70% above 1.0 mln GPB.

EXERCISE 7.3

Use the data in the file HP_LONDON_JAN19.xlsx.

  1. A broker states that based on historic figures houses in the Newham district are more expensive than houses in the Croydon district. Perform a two-sample t-test to investigate whether the selling prices of January give support to this assumption.
  2. Test whether the selling prices in January 2019 in the Brent district differ from the selling prices in the Camden district (do you expect a difference based on the location of these districts?).

EXERCISE 7.4

Use the data in the file HP_LONDON_JAN19.xlsx.
A researcher is interested in whether the selling prices of terraced houses differ significantly from the selling prices of semi-detached houses.
Operationalize this question using a significance test and perform the test.

Exercise 7.5

Research topic: house asking prices in the four big cities – Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht - in The Netherlands. Research sub question: how do house prices differ between the four cities?
Data: 20190312_forsale.xlsx.

  1. Perform a graphical analysis to answer this sub question.
  2. Create a table with summary statistics to answer this sub question.
  3. Perform a significance test to investigate if house prices in Rotterdam differ from house prices in The Hague.

Exercise 7.6 (investigating ozone air pollution)

The file TheHagueOzone.xlsx contains Ozone (O3) levels measured in The Hague in 2016.

  1. Is there a significance difference between the Ozone level in the weekend and the Ozone level during the weekdays? Think about one or more tests to investigate this.
  2. Try to find out if the data support the assumption that during the winter the Ozone level tends to be lower than in the summer.
