Chapter 5 Get Started at University

5.1 Overview

Information in course documents suggests students need to any number of things to get their SGU life up and running. Zoe calls this set of activities “student life admin” (#Zoe). Life admin tasks include things like buying needed items and finding important places online and on campus.


5.1.1 Finding important places 19/30

Many courses’ Sakai documents tell us that students need to be able to find important places on campus, such as their classroom and lab locations. I’m sure this information goes without saying for all of us!

5.1.2 Getting a textbook 17/30

Many course documents have required textbooks or at least a handful of required textbook chapters. Some courses, such as lab-heavy courses, may not have textbooks. Some courses do not require students to read textbooks.

5.1.3 Reading the student manual 17/30

Many courses refer students to the student manual, such as to learn more about the SGU dress code or (un)professional behaviors.

5.1.4 Getting a clicker 8/30

Of course, students need to get a clicker!

BIOL 401 

An Audience Response System (clicker) is used to assess student
participation and performance in instructional sessions. Its use reflects
the participation and performance of the student to whom the device is
registered. Misrepresentation of participation and/or performance through
the misuse of clickers constitutes academic dishonesty and may result in the
dismissal of any student committing such a violation of the Student Code of
Conduct.

Students need a lab coat for some courses.
