Chapter 6 Be Professional

6.1 Overview

This section lays out some of the professional behaviors stated in courses’ Sakai documents. Many of the behaviors listed here appear in syllabi as well as PPT slides from introductory course lectures.


6.1.1 Don’t plagiarize 14/30

Many course documents refer to the section about plagiarism in the student manual to remind students not to plagiarize material or others’ writing.

The St. George’s University Student Manual (2008/2009, page 45) states as
follows: “Plagiarism is regarded as a cardinal offence in academia because
it constitutes theft of the work of someone else which is then purported as
the original work of the plagiarist.”

6.1.2 Attend lab and lecture sessions 12/30

Many course documents encourage students to arrive to all lectures and lab sessions on time.

Students are expected to attend all classes for which they have registered.

6.1.3 Make an appointment with faculty 12/30

Some documents tell students, if they want to speak with faculty, to make an appointment, often in person.

All faculty appointments need to be made in person with the course secretary
at the main anatomy office (across from Modica Hall) between the hours of
09:30–15:30 only.

6.1.4 Submit a medical excuse 11/30

Many documents tell students to submit a medical excuse form or doctor’s note if they miss sessions.

These cannot be made up outside of class unless under special circumstances
(for example, illness with Dr.’s note).

6.1.5 Email faculty 10/30

Students have to send faculty email under different circumstances.

6.1.6 Be on time to sessions 9/30

Course documents ask students to arrive on time to sessions.

Make up sessions will not be offered and you must come on time.

6.1.7 Turn off or silence cell phones 9/30

Students are asked to turn off or silence cell phones in many course docs.

Before entering the class, students are required to turn off all cell
phones, beepers and any other form of technology that could disrupt the
class.

6.1.8 Actively participate 8/30

Many course docs have a line, asking students to actively participate in labs or in class.

6.1.9 Submit assignments on time 7/30

Some courses’ Sakai docs tell students to submit assignments on time.

Assignments must be submitted during the specified time. Late submissions
would not be accepted at any time after the given late submission date.

6.1.10 Respect others 7/30

Respecting others is a behavior that comes up across documents.

Classroom Etiquette: Respect for the lecturer and other classmates is
required.

6.1.11 Ask for help 7/30

Some course docs explicitly encourage students to ask for help when they need it.

6.1.12 Dress appropriately 5/30

Appropriate dress for class and labs comes up here and there.

6.1.13 Check email 4/30

Some courses ask students to check email, usually daily.

Check SGU email daily; this is the only official email account that is used
to relay messages between University and students.

6.1.14 Use OK language 3/30

Some courses remind students to use appropriate language.

Use only professional language relevant to course material: no derogative
remarks or inappropriate language is allowed.
