Chapter 11 Other or miscellaneous (maybe helpful?) things

11.1 Overview

This section contains information from course docs that might be helpful to know. Some of the codes in this section might overlap with information in other sections. For example, “Watch videos online” might also fall into the “Interpret text” or “Reading” category. Other information might be helpful for us to refer to.

11.1.1 Watch videos online 15/30

Students sometimes have to watch videos, or links are provided to watch videos, in some courses’ docs.

11.1.3 Critical thinking 4/30

The need to demonstrate critical-thinking skills comes up in some course docs.

BIOL 101

Critical Thinking Questions

1. Gerald recently visited the dentist. During the cleaning process, Gerald
had some bleeding from his gums. A couple of days later, Gerald developed a
fever, rapid heartbeat, sweating, and chills. He visited his family
physician, who detected a slight heart murmur. Gerald was given antibiotics
and continued to have his heart monitored. How was Gerald’s dental visit
related to his illness?

2. Unathletic Sylvia resolves to begin an exercise
program. She tells you that she wants to make her heart “beat as fast as it
can” during exercise. Explain why that may not be a good idea.

11.1.4 Sample essays 3/30

Some courses make use of sample essays to help students.

11.1.5 Boolean phrases 2/30

The use of Boolean phrases for searches comes up in two courses’ docs.

PUBH 302

Use this when you are being more selective: combining with AND will always
give you the fewest results. This is because each item has to contain all of
your terms

Combining with OR

Use this when you are being less selective: combining with
OR will always give you the most results. This is because each item only has
to contain one of your terms
