Chapter 7 Use Technology

7.1 Overview

Information in Sakai course documents indicate students need to use different technology and software in their PCLN and SOM-Y1 courses. Software include things like Sakai and Microsoft Word, for example. Some technologies include clickers and the internet.

7.1.1 Sakai 14/30

Of course, Sakai seems to be the most frequently used bit of technology by students. “Sakai” is a strange category because instructors make documents available on Sakai, but not all course documents make reference to Sakai. Some of these categories might be no-brainer categories (like “use email”).

7.1.2 Internet 11/30

Another strange category. Students have to use the internet to access documents on Sakai, but, information in course documents does not always ask students to use the internet beyond that. A lot of example codings in this category come from links that students have to click on or sites students are direct to in course docs.

7.1.4 Clickers 7/30

Students have to use clickers to record attendance or participate in class.

Clickers used to record attendance (no clickers today). Make sure you have
registered your clicker on Sakai! If you do not click in, your attendance
will not be recorded.

7.1.5 Library databases 3/30

Students are sometimes directed to get on or use library databases.

PUBH 302

Be Specific The single most important step is to define what it is you are
looking for and be as specific as you can in your search (particularly if
you’re using a general purpose search engine). If you’re looking for
“Guidelines for cardiomyopathy treatment”, go straight there. Don’t waste
your time with “cardiomyopathy” (or worse yet, “heart disease”).

ENGL 213, PCLN 302, PUBH 302

7.1.6 Microsoft Word 3/30

Students have to use Microsoft Word in some courses.

SSCI 412

Unless otherwise indicated, submit your written assignments electronically
(i.e., in the designated assignment drop box on Sakai), as a Word
attachment.

COMP 111, PCLN 302, SSCI 412

7.1.7 YouCanBookMe 2/30

Students use YouCanBookMe in their CHP courses.

PCLN 303

Office hours: We encourage you to make additional appointments during the
semester for assistance with assignments. Walk-in appointments are subject
to availability. Appointments can be made online through youcanbook.me (see
links on first page for making appointments).

7.1.8 Histology Time 1/30

One course’s docs ask students to use Histology Time.

BIOL 221

We will be looking at Histology slides, and they are available for review in
Histology Time.
