2 Seminar One

In the lecture this week you will have learnt about the research process, peer review and IMRaD. In today’s seminar we will take a closer look at a journal article and discuss what is typically included in each section and how each section is generally constructed/written.

2.1 Task 1

Based on the course you are studying select the most appropriate journal article (link) below and read the article in its entirety.

Highlight anything you are unsure of, don’t understand, or want to discuss amongst your seminar group. There will be plenty of things you will not have been introduced to yet so don’t worry if there are lots of things highlighted.

  • Sports Therapy: Donec, V., & Kubilius, R. (2020). The effectiveness of Kinesio Taping® for mobility and functioning improvement in knee osteoarthritis: a randomized, double-blind, controlled trial. Clinical rehabilitation, 34(7), 877-889. https://doi.org/10.1177/0269215520916859
  • Sports and Exercise: Hammond, A., Perrin, C., Steele, J., Giessing, J., Gentil, P., & Fisher, J. P. (2019). The effects of a 4-week mesocycle of barbell back squat or barbell hip thrust strength training upon isolated lumbar extension strength. PeerJ, 7, e7337. https://doi.org/10.7717/peerj.7337
  • Sports Psychology: Fortes, L. D. S., Almeida, S. S., Nascimento Junior, J. R. A. D., Vieira, L. F., Lima-Júnior, D., & Ferreira, M. E. C. (2019). Effect of motor imagery training on tennis service performance in young tennis athletes. Revista de psicología del deporte, 28(1), 0157-168. https://doi.org/10.3390/sports7060148

2.2 Task 2

Now, re-read the article and for each section (Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion) consider what information the authors have reported and how they have structured each section. Discuss your findings as a seminar group.

Based on what you have read, discuss the following as a group;

  • What was known about the topic before this research was conducted?
  • What was the rationale for conducting this specific piece of research?
  • How was the research conducted
    • Who was studied?
    • What was studied?
    • What was being assessed?
    • What are the outcomes being measured?
  • What were the main findings/results?
  • How did these findings compare to previously published studies?
  • What are the implications for practice?
  • What was the overarching take away message?
