6 Seminar Five

In the lecture this week you will have learnt about synthesising the data that was collected as part of the data extraction process. You will have also been introduced to how this information should be reported.

6.1 Task 1

Last week you were instructed to read, highlight and make notes on one of the following articles:

  • Sports Therapy: Sellwood, K. L., Brukner, P., Williams, D., Nicol, A., & Hinman, R. (2007). Ice-water immersion and delayed-onset muscle soreness: a randomised controlled trial. British journal of sports medicine, 41(6), 392-397. http://dx.doi.org/10.1136/bjsm.2006.033985
  • Sports and Exercise: Singh, J., Appleby, B. B., & Lavender, A. P. (2018). Effect of plyometric training on speed and change of direction ability in elite field hockey players. Sports, 6(4), 144. https://doi.org/10.3390/sports6040144
  • Sports Psychology: Gilbert, A. L., Lee, J., Ehrlich-Jones, L., Semanik, P. A., Song, J., Pellegrini, C. A., … & Chang, R. W. (2018, April). A randomized trial of a motivational interviewing intervention to increase lifestyle physical activity and improve self-reported function in adults with arthritis. In Seminars in arthritis and rheumatism (Vol. 47, No. 5, pp. 732-740). WB Saunders. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.semarthrit.2017.10.003

As a group discuss this article, extract any information relating to the population, intervention, outcome and result.

6.2 Task 2

As a group formulate a paragraph, using the PIOR structuring method, that summarises the study.

6.3 Task 3

Using a basic search strategy, identify another study that has been published on the topic of interest. Compare and contrast these studies and identify any similarities and/or differences in the population, intervention, outcome and results. Using the manchester phrasebank add a couple of sentences to task 2 to highlight a similarity of difference between these studies.
