5 Seminar Four
In the lecture this week you will have learnt about data extraction. In todays seminar we will have a go at extracting data from an article creating a characteristics of studies table. You will then begin to apply this process for your own review.
5.1 Task 1
Lets apply the data extraction skills you have learnt using the following article: The effects of sprint training and the Nordic hamstring exercise on eccentric hamstring strength and sprint performance in adolescent athletes https://doi.org/10.23736/S0022-4707.18.08703-0
Firstly, download the article onto your own onedrive and open it in a pdf reader (such as, Adobe Acrobat). Using the highlighter tool, highlight the text in the following way:
- Blue: Any information pertaining to the population being studied
- Yellow: Any information pertaining to the intervention/exposure being studied
- Green: Any information pertaining to the outcomes being assessed
- Red: Any information pertaining to the results/findings of the study
5.2 Task 2
Create a table in microsoft word and enter the information from task 1 into your table:
Author | Date | Population | Intervention/Exposure | Outcome | Results |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Enter the author(s) name | Enter the date the article was published | Summarise the population here | Summarise the intervention/exposure here | Summarise the outcome here | Summarise the result(s) here |
You have now created your first ‘characteristics of studies’ table.
5.3 Task 3
Using one of the studies you downloaded last week into a folder named ‘reviewing_scientific_literature_search’ extract the relevant data and enter it into the ‘shared’ excel document below (make sure you are using the correct course tab)
Reviewing Scientific Literature Data Extraction Sheet
This is a live document so you will need to make sure that each of you are working on a different row to avoid overwriting each others work
Once you have all entered the information for a study, you will be able to see similarities and difference between studies. This will be really useful later in the literature review process when you come to write up the findings of the review.
5.4 Task 4
Next week will be another journal club. In preperation for this, you will need to read, highlight and make notes on the following article (using the data extraction techniques you have just learnt)
- Sports Therapy: Sellwood, K. L., Brukner, P., Williams, D., Nicol, A., & Hinman, R. (2007). Ice-water immersion and delayed-onset muscle soreness: a randomised controlled trial. British journal of sports medicine, 41(6), 392-397. http://dx.doi.org/10.1136/bjsm.2006.033985
