11 Seminar Ten
In the lecture this week you will have learnt about interpreting and writing up the results. In this session you will use the statistical analysis you performed last week to write up your results and discussion ready for your presentation assessment.
11.1 Task 1
Lets start by repeating the study hypotheses. For your project, write out the null and alternate hypothesis. NB: Remember that the null hypothesis is that there will be no difference in the primary outcome between the two conditions (intervention and control). The alternate hypothesis is that there will be difference in the primary outcome between the two conditions (intervention and control).
11.2 Task 2
Next, download and save the consort flow diagram template to your onedrive. Then, complete this to reflect the recruitment for your study.
Now describe the participants in the study by using the descriptive data (i.e. age, weight, height etc) This should be presented as a table formatted according to APA guidelines and as a written pose. Write a few sentences now to describe the participants recruited to your study; this should include how many participants there were, the percentage of males/females, and a summary of their characteristics (age, weight, height, BMI and any other data you collected)
11.3 Task 3
Using the data output generated last week, identify the following:
- Direction: Were the results favourable or unfavourable (increase/decrease, faster/slower, better/worse etc)
- Magnitude: What were the mean values of each group and the mean difference between groups
- Precision: What was the standard deviation associated with the means of each group and the between group difference (or 95% confidence intervals)
- Significance: Was the p value greater or less than 0.05? (NB: greater than 0.05 indicates non significance, less than indicates significance)
Again, this data should be reported in a table and as written pose. Since the tables we generated in Jamovi last week can be used directly in your assessment, lets focus on the write up of these results. Now you have the direction, magnitude, precision and significance, write a few sentences that communicate your findings to the reader.
NB: when presenting a statistical analysis you should include the test statistics (F/t value, the Df value, and the p value)
11.4 Task 4
Finally, give your findings some context by writing a short discussion.
The discussion should include the following items:
- Remind the reader of the primary aim/objective
- Provide an interpretation of the primary findings
- Compare and contrast with previous studies
- Discuss the strengths and limitations of the study
- Consider any unexpected findings
