5 Seminar Four

In the lecture this week you will have learnt about randomised controlled trials. In this session you will be introduced to a study that you will be using to design your own studies.

5.1 Task 1

Download the following article onto your own onedrive and open it in a pdf reader (such as, Adobe Acrobat). Read the study, make notes on it and think about how you could continue this work.

  • Sports Therapy:
  1. Single and combined effect of kinesio tape and warm-up on sprint cycling performance
  • Sports and Exercise:
  1. The difference between squat jump and countermovement jump in 770 male and female participants from different sports

5.2 Task 2

Consider you are a group of researchers interested in these fields of research. Having read these studies you are considering how you might further their work in order to confirm or refute their findings. In your groups, discuss how you might design a study that would compliment the studies you have read.

The studies you design do not need to be entirely new or indeed novel. You might simply modify how the intervention was administered (different type, dose/intensity, frequency etc). You might be interested in measuring something different (outcome). You might want to see if these findings are consistent in different populations (athletic/sedentary, young/old, male/female etc).

5.3 Task 3

Using GitMind collboratively brainstorm your ideas. Use the following questions to help guide your discussion:

  • What is the research question? (intervention, outcome, participants)
  • What study design is most suitable?
  • Who will you recruit? (eligibility criteria)
  • How will you recruit them?
  • What will the intervention/exposure look like? (type, intensity, frequency, duration etc)
  • Who will administer the intervention?
  • What equipment and training will you require?
  • Where will you conduct the study?
  • What will you measure? (outcomes)
  • When will you perform the measurements? (outcome timepoints)
  • What equipment and training will you require?
  • Who will perform the measurements? (outcome assessor)
  • Will you use a control group? (active, placebo, non active)
  • Will you use blinding (participant, assessor, statistican)
  • Will you use randomisation?

5.4 Task 4

Download the following word template protocol_template_v1 onto one of your groups onedrive accounts and save it as followed surname_surname_surname_surname_protocol_v1 [ie stanhope_warnett_furniss_cutler_bateman_v1].

Now share the link with your peers/group so you can all work on the document simultaneously. This document will serve as a standard operating procedure for your trial and will also be reviewed by your lecturer to ensure there are no ethical concerns.

For the remainder of the session compile the relevant information into this protocol document.

If you havent finished this task in lesson continue to work on this as a group independently.
