2 Seminar One

In the lecture this week you will have learnt about a number of different types of experimental research and ethical considerations. In this session you will undertake a mini experimental study.

2.1 Task 1

As a group, review and discuss the fabricated study protocol outlined below. Consult with your tutor if you are unsure of any of the language and/or methods being used. Once you have discussed the study you will take responsibility for conducting the study, collecting the data, and analysing the findings.

2.1.1 Study design:

A non-randomised, unblinded, single arm, pre-test post-test study

2.1.2 Study participants:

Participants will be recruited from Staffordshire University via conducting research seminars. No incentives will be offered for the participation in this research.

Healthy students I) 18-50 years of age, II) studying at Staffordshire University, III) enrolled on the conducting research module, IV) willing to participate in the study will be included. Students who have I) experienced a lower limb injury in the last 4 weeks, II) have a neurological impairment of any description III) are unwilling to participate will be excluded from the study.

2.1.3 Outcomes

Knee to wall (KTW) test:

This test should be conducted before (pre-test) the intervention and after (post-test) the intervention

  1. Place a measuring tape on the ground parallel to a wall, measuring away from the wall
  2. Ask the participant to Kneel down in a lunge position with their lead foot two or three inches away from the wall
  3. Ask the participant to push their front knee forward to see if it touches the wall without their heel lifting up
  4. If they are able to touch their knee to the wall, ask them to back up until they are barely able to touch their knee against the wall
  5. Measure the distance achieved

Record the results in the following database: mini_study_KTW

2.1.4 Intervention:

Mouth opening stretch (Myofascial release):

  1. Passively stretch your mouth open to your maximum painless position by placing your fingers against your lower teeth and gently pushing your lower jaw down in order to open your mouth
  2. You can also use a “scissors action” by placing your thumb against your upper teeth and a finger against your lower teeth to open your mouth.
  3. Hold the maximum opening for 5-10 seconds
  4. Rest for 10 seconds
  5. Repeat these steps 3 more times

2.1.5 Analysis

Descriptive data is calculated for anthropometric measurements and expressed as mean ± standard deviation. Normality is assessed by the Shapiro-Wilk’s test. The within-participant difference in knee to wall (KTW) range of motion is estimated using a paired t-test. All data will be analysed using Jamovi.

2.2 Task 2

Download the following article onto your own onedrive and open it in a pdf reader (such as, Adobe Acrobat). Read the study and make notes in preparation for next weeks seminar:
