Section 4 Demographics

4.1 Introduction

The following sections include the general respondent demographics and the respondent demographics used in analyses to see if there were differences in how specific subgroups answered the question. The general demographics were available to all survey respondents and included age, the highest level of education, gender, heritage, primary language spoken at home, and English language fluency for those who speak a language other than English at home. The analysis demographics included:

  • The respondents’ business and/or entrepreneurial role.
  • Gender.
  • Family-owned businesses.
  • Stage of business development.

All respondents answered about their business and/or entrepreneurial role and gender. In contrast, only existing business owners answered if their business was family-owned and the stage of development their business was in.

4.2 Key Findings

  • About a third of current and prospective business owners participating in the survey have a Bachelor’s degree, a quarter have a high school diploma or GED, and 21% have an associate’s degree as their highest level of education.
  • 40% of current and prospective owners participating in the survey identified as having a Mexican heritage.
  • 71% of current and prospective owners report speaking Spanish at home, and 59% report speaking English. Some of these business owners speak more than one language at home.
  • 43% of current and prospective owners who speak a language other than English at home speak English well, 29% speak English very well, and 28% do not speak English well.
  • 64% of current owners describe their businesses as family-owned.
  • 70% of current owners describe their businesses as being in the start up and /or growth stage of business development.
  • 52% of current and prospective owners identify as men, while 48% identify as women.

4.3 Survey: Demographics

The following section presents general respondent demographics and includes age, the highest level of education, gender, heritage, primary language spoken at home, and English language fluency for those who speak a language other than English at home. Some original variables were collapsed for better interpretation (i.e., highest level of education) or data privacy (i.e., heritage). Please note that most data visualizations presented in this section are interactive; hover to see the percentages.

4.3.1 Age

The largest share of survey respondents are between 35 and 44 years old (37%), followed by those 45 to 65 (31%), and those 25 to 34 (26%). About 5% of respondents were between 18 and 24, and about 1% were between 65 and 74.

4.3.2 Highest Level of Education

About a third of respondents (32%) have a Bachelor’s degree as their highest level of education. About a quarter of respondents (23%) have a high school diploma or a GED, and about a fifth (21%) have an associate’s degree. About 12% of respondents have a master’s or higher degree, and about 12% have some high school or 8th grade as their highest level of education.

4.3.3 Gender

Slightly more respondents identify as men (52%) than women (48%).

4.3.4 Heritage

The most common heritage reported by respondents is Mexican heritage (40%). Additionally, 11% of respondents report Brazilian heritage, 9% Argentinian, and 8% Colombian. An additional 33% percent report a less common heritage or a heritage not listed on the survey. They include the following countries:

  • Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

4.3.5 Primary Language Spoken at Home

Two questions were asked in the survey to understand language fluency. The first was a select all that apply, which asked all respondents to identify the primary language spoken at home. The next question asked any respondent who spoke a language other than English at home about their English fluency level.

4.3.5.1 Primary Language

Approximately 71% of respondents speak Spanish at home, and 59% speak English; this includes respondents who speak more than one language at home. One respondent reported speaking French in addition to English and Spanish at home.

4.3.5.2 English Fluency

About 43% of respondents who speak a language other than English at home report speaking English well. About 29% report speaking it very well, and 28% report not speaking English well.

4.4 Analysis: Demographic or Disaggregating Groups

This section includes the respondent demographics used to determine differences in responses between different subgroups. It includes the following: the respondents’ business and/or entrepreneurial role, gender, family-owned businesses, and stage of business development.

4.4.1 Business and/or Entrepreneurial Role

Most survey respondents (67%) describe themselves as small or medium business owners or entrepreneurs, while 33% are in the beginning stages of starting or planning to start a business.

4.4.2 Gender

Slightly more respondents identify as men (52%) than women (48%).

4.4.3 Family-Owned Businesses

Most current business owners (64%) describe themselves as family-owned businesses, while 36% are not family-owned businesses.

4.4.4 Stage of Business Development

Most current owners indicate they are in the startup and / or growth stage of business development (70%), while 23% identify as being in the expanded, matured, and/or exiting stage.
