Chapter 6 Laboratory Safety Sign-in Sheet
This sheet is to be handed in. All laboratories contain many potential hazards. Applying basic safety precautions and procedures can minimize these hazards. It is therefore imperative that every student working in the chemistry undergraduate laboratory fully understands and obeys the following basic safety precautions and procedures at all times. Failure to do so will result in expulsion from the laboratory.
Safety rules:
- All students must wear approved eye protection when in the laboratory.
- Eating and drinking is prohibited in the laboratory.
- Never taste any substance. Smell, when necessary, only with caution.
- Never pipette by mouth.
- Protective clothing, including a lab coat, must be worn. No open-toed shoes are allowed. Pants or skirts must completely cover the legs.
- Do not allow any chemical to come into contact with your skin unnecessarily.
- Always follow the specific instructions for disposing of chemical and other waste.
- Spilled chemicals, wet or dry, must be cleaned up appropriately and immediately. Contact the demonstrator for assistance.
- Broken glassware must be cleaned up appropriately and immediately. Contact the demonstrator for assistance.
- Before starting an experiment, refer to the laboratory manual and relevant MSD Sheets for any additional safety precautions and procedures. Know the location of the appropriate safety equipment.
- Never perform unauthorized experiments or deviate from the laboratory instructions without permission.
- Always report any accident to the demonstrator; this includes cuts, burns, spills, etc. I agree to abide by these and any other safety regulations, which may, from time to time, be added by the course instructors.
