Why Hire Clinical Psychologists?

By Dr. Jim Schroeder

Not everyone who struggles with mental health issues needs to see a psychologist, but in particular situations (especially with youth), psychologists fill a role that others cannot.  Here are 7 key reasons why supporting the growth of psychology in this area is important for all.

Psychological testing/assessment

No other mental health professionals receive extensive training to administer comprehensive psychological assessments, which is often a key in best understanding underlying factors that are causing difficulties and guiding individualized, research-based treatment recommendations.

Continuity of care

Psychologists are the only professionals who can do initial consultation and psychological assessment, and then follow-up with therapy if this is indicated.  So often individuals and parents complain of having to see multiple professionals for the same problem.  Psychologists can remove barriers associated with this issue, and establish a strong partnership with patients and families for the mental health care that is needed.

Minimize likelihood of misdiagnosis

Every year, thousands of individuals are misdiagnosed in the mental health arena due to a lack of comprehensive assessment and inadequate training.  This can lead to dire outcomes, especially when a misdiagnosis leads to an inappropriate prescription of a psychiatric medication, which induces unnecessary and possibly even fatal side effects.  When this occurs, people become increasingly frustrated and wary about seeking out mental health care in the future.

Independent Practice

Unlike most other mental health professionals, who must be formally supervised in aspects of billing and clinical care, psychologists are recognized as completely independent practitioners.  Thus, they are able to practice fluidly in outpatient and inpatient settings alike.

Extensive training in empirically-supported treatments

Due to issues of time and limited training opportunities, many mental health professionals do not obtain specialized treatments that carry the best outcomes for specific psychological conditions.  Thus, clients may find themselves committing time and effort into therapeutic experiences that lack clear scientific backing when a psychologist is not involved.

Regional demand

Due to more than just the number of people living in larger cities, residents of the Tri-state have an even greater difficulty accessing psychological care.  Due to a variety of factors, it is not uncommon for individuals and families to wait 6 or more months to see a psychologist due to a low concentration of these professionals in this area.

Highest quality of mental health care

Just as we demand the highest quality medical care, so we should accept nothing less when it comes to mental health issues.  Although some mental health issues can be adequately treated by other providers, psychologists fill a critical need in making sure that the best, most advanced care is available for those who need it.
