5.1 Executive summary

  • The percentage, henceforth representation, of Muslims is decreasing in the level of education, across all subject areas amongst UK domiciled students. For example, amongst UK domiciled students studying Medicine, dentistry and veterinary sciences, the ratio of Muslim representation amongst undergraduates, to postgraduate taught masters students, to postgraduate research students is approximately 3:2:1

  • There exists consistent under-representation of Muslims in Natural and Mathematical sciences, Humanities and languages, and Design and creative and performing arts relative to the average representation of Muslims across the UK domiciled population - which varies from 3-10% depending on the year and level of education

  • The average representation of UK domiciled Muslims is increasing over time across all levels of education, in particular amongst undergraduates, most notably for Medicine, dentistry and veterinary sciences

  • Muslim representation is increasing in the level of education amongst non-UK domiciled students; in particular, the representation of Muslims amongst Postgraduate research students is significantly higher than amongst postgraduate taught masters and undergraduate students, across most subject areas
