The Representation of Muslims in Higher Education
Part 1 Abstract
There were approximately 255,000 Muslims studying at UK universities in the academic year 2020/21 across all levels of higher education, accounting for 9.8% of the total student population. The proportion and number of Muslims in higher education is growing across all levels and domiciles from 2017-2021. The representation of British Muslims amongst UK domiciled students is lower at higher levels of education, across all subject areas.
Business and Management is the most over-represented subject amongst Muslims, whilst Design and creative and performing arts is most under-represented subject amongst Muslims. There exists consistent under-representation of Muslims in Natural and Mathematical sciences, Humanities and languages, and Design and creative and performing arts relative to the average representation of Muslims across the UK domiciled population.
