Chapter 1 Key information

CLICK HERE TO JUMP TO THE CURRENT SECTION.

Hi Everyone– My name is Anshul and I will be visiting your class on Oct 21, Oct 28, Nov 4, and Nov 18 in the fall 2021 offering of GC621. This e-book contains the materials that we will use during our four weeks together. Each week, there will be an assignment that you need to do before class. These assignments can be found in the Before class section within each week’s chapter in this e-book. If you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to email me any time at or contact me by phone.1 I look forward to meeting all of you and learning about your work. -Anshul

What to do next, if you’re reading this for the first time: In the week prior to our Oct 21 2021 meeting, please read this entire chapter and also the Before Class portion of the next chapter. Please complete all Before Class assignments by the time class begins on Oct 21 2021.

1.1 Notes, reminders, and tips

  • Many of the examples of data and research that you will encounter in this e-book use a binary, inappropriately narrow, and/or potentially problematic conceptualization of sex, gender, and other individual-level characteristics. My personal view is that this is often not the best way to organize data or present examples. Furthermore, our collective understanding of sex, gender, race, ethnicity, and other individual characteristics is constantly changing, and it is critical for all of us as health professionals and researchers to engage in related discussions and initiatives. I am always looking for materials that represent a more inclusive framework and I do update materials when possible. I welcome your input and suggested alternatives.2

  • You can use control + F (Windows/Linux) or command + F (Mac) to search the open chapter quickly.

  • There are many footnotes that you can click on, like the one at the end of this sentence, with tips and commentary.3

  • This e-book was used in GC621 at MGHIHP in previous years. I will try to make sure that everything is updated for this year, but feel free to let me know if you notice any mistakes (of this or any kind)!

  • If you want a PDF version of a particular chapter in this e-book, try using your web browser to print the chapter. In the print window, tell the computer that you want to print to PDF rather than to a real printer.

  • Send any comments or questions to Anshul Kumar ().
