Chapter 5 Other continuous distributions

In addition to the normal distribution, there are many other continuous distributions that are commonly used in statistics. The below table summarises a few, followed by example probability density functions graphically displayed. We will revisit some of these distributions later on in the subject.

Distribution Parameters
Student's \(t\)
\(X\sim t_{\text{df}}\)
\(\text{df}\) (degrees of freedom)
F
\(X\sim F(d_1, d_2)\)
\(d_1, d_2\)
Chi-squared
\(X\sim \chi^2(k)\)
\(k\)
Exponential
\(X\sim \text{EXP}(\lambda)\)
\(\lambda\)
