5 Estimated resident population (ERP)

The estimated resident population (ERP) is the official measure of Australia's population based on the concept of usual residence. It includes all people, regardless of nationality or citizenship, who usually live in Australia, except foreign diplomatic personnel and overseas visitors who are in Australia for less than a year or more.

All population data were sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics using the most up-to-date estimates available.

5.1 National (Australia) population

Population data for the whole of Australia by sex, calendar year and single-year age groups (15,16…100+ years) was obtained from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2023)

5.2 Small area (SA2) level population

Population data for each SA2 area by sex, calendar year and five-year age groups was obtained from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2022a) Geographical information was available at the 2016 SA2 level for 2001 to 2019 but for earlier years (1996-2000) it was only available by 2011 SA2. Population data was obtained from the Data Explorer functionality, .(Stat Data Explorer (BETA) (abs.gov.au)) The 2011 SA2 information was converted to 2016 SA2s using population-weighted correspondence files.
