1 Introduction
1.1 Module Details
This module aims to develop student’s knowledge and understanding of scientific randomised controlled trials, including the techniques used to minimise bias by randomising participants, blinding participants, assessors and/or statisticians, selecting an appropriate control arm and other key methodological features. Students will learn how to devise a protocol in accordance with good reporting guidelines and how to use advanced analytical techniques to generate results and aid in the interpretation of study findings.
1.2 Learning Outcomes
The learning outcomes for this module are:
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the methodological features associated with the planning of a randomised controlled trial on a topic within the field of sports and exercise/therapy
- Apply the underlying concepts and principles associated with conducting rigorous research by conducting a randomised controlled trial on a topic within the field of sports and exercise/therapy
- Communicate effectively the findings from a randomised controlled trial on a topic within the field of sports and exercise/therapy to specialist and non-specialist audiences
1.3 Assessments
The learning outcomes for this module will be assessed with a 20 minute viva during a mini simulated conference. During the seminars you will be planning and conducting an pilot/feasibility trial. You will be required to individually write up the findings in the form of an academic poster and present this as part of a mini simulated conference.
- As part of your module content you will plan and conduct a pilot study
- You will individually produce an academic infographic to communicate the findings of the pilot study at a simulated conference
- You will have 20 minutes to individually present the hypothesis, methodological features and data analysis of the pilot study
