# Chapter 1 Assumptions

The assumptions of the one-way ANOVA test can be summarised as follows:

**One-way ANOVA Assumptions:**

- The data are numeric
- Independence of observations
- The
are normally distributed*residuals* - Equal variances between groups.

As we can see, these assumptions are not dissimilar to the assumptions we have seen previously for the independent samples \(t\)-test. However, here we will be checking for normality of the ** residuals**, which will be discussed later. In order to obtain the residuals, we will need to carry out the test first. For that reason, we will check the assumptions

*after*carrying out the one-way ANOVA test.
