Introduction

In the previous topic, we looked at hypothesis tests for proportions, namely, the one and two sample test of proportions. In this topic, we will be considering another type of test that can be used to address hypotheses regarding proportions that come about by studying categorical variables: the Chi-squared test. There are many different types of Chi-squared tests. In this topic, we will be looking specifically at the Chi-squared goodness of fit test and the Chi-squared test of independence. In some ways, these tests can be considered extensions of the test of proportions we considered last week.
